Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 21, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how 1984 — Escape Room (also distributed as Escape Room: Protocol Series; the "App", "we", "us") handles information when you use the App on iOS, and when you visit this website.
The short version. The App was built to collect as close to nothing as possible. There are no ads, no tracking, no third-party analytics, and no user database — we operate no servers of our own. Your camera feed is processed on your device for augmented reality and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted. The only personal identifier we ever receive is the anonymous Apple user ID created if you optionally use Sign in with Apple.
1. Information we collect
We collect and store only the following, and only on your device or within Apple's systems:
- Apple user identifier (optional). If you choose to use Sign in with Apple to unlock the two bonus rooms, Apple provides the App with an anonymous, app-specific user identifier. We do not request your name or email address — the sign-in requests no personal scopes at all. This identifier is stored securely in the iOS Keychain on your device and is used solely to remember that your rooms are unlocked.
- Purchase records. Purchases and subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store (StoreKit). We receive transaction and entitlement information (what was purchased and whether it is active) so the App can unlock your content. We never see your payment details.
- Gameplay data. Progress, escape times, notebook entries, and settings are stored locally on your device. They leave your device only as part of your own iOS device backups, under your control.
2. Camera and augmented reality
The App requires camera access because the game is played in augmented reality — puzzles are anchored to the real surfaces around you. The camera feed is processed on your device, in real time, by Apple's ARKit framework. The App does not capture, store, or transmit photos, video, or any reconstruction of your surroundings.
One room (MERIDIAN) reacts to the brightness of your room using ARKit's ambient light estimation. This is a single on-device brightness value — nothing camera-derived is stored or transmitted.
3. What we do not do
- We do not show ads and do not work with advertising networks.
- We do not track you across apps or websites, and we do not use third-party analytics SDKs.
- We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with anyone.
- We do not require an account to play, and we run no servers that hold user data.
4. This website
This website is a static site. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Our hosting provider (Fly.io) and font provider (Google Fonts) may process standard technical request data — such as your IP address — as any web server must in order to deliver content; we do not use this data to identify you.
5. Data retention and deletion
Because your data lives on your device, you are in control of it:
- Deleting the App removes locally stored gameplay data.
- You can disconnect Sign in with Apple at any time in Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ Sign-In & Security ▸ Sign in with Apple, which invalidates the identifier described above.
- Purchase history is retained by Apple under Apple's own policies.
If you would like help removing anything, or want confirmation of what exists (typically: nothing beyond the above), contact us at the address below.
6. Children's privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the App collects no personal information beyond the optional anonymous Apple identifier, no child-specific data is gathered. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will address it.
7. Security
The Apple user identifier is stored in the iOS Keychain, Apple's encrypted credential store. All purchase processing is handled by Apple's own infrastructure. Because we hold no user data on servers, there is no server-side account for anyone to breach.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA/CPRA in California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port personal data. Given the App's design, the personal data we could hold about you is limited to the anonymous Apple identifier described above — but those rights apply to it, and you can exercise them (or just ask questions) by emailing us. We will respond within the timelines required by applicable law. We do not discriminate against anyone for exercising privacy rights.
9. Third-party services
The App is built on Apple platform services, which are governed by Apple's own privacy policy:
- App Store, StoreKit (purchases), Sign in with Apple, and ARKit — see Apple's Privacy Policy.
- This website loads fonts from Google Fonts — see Google's Privacy Policy.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy — for example, if a future update adds an online feature — we will post the new version here and update the effective date above. Material changes will be called out in the App's release notes.
